How to make a new media outlet recognizable: identity for Shelter
shelter.in.uaAbout the project
Shelter Media is an independent Ukrainian online media outlet founded by a team of professional journalists and editors. It covers key events in Ukraine and around the world and tells stories about the people and processes shaping the country.
Challenge
When a new media outlet enters the market, it needs to establish its own identity straight away.
Shelter Media had to stand out from other media outlets at every point of contact with its audience — on its website, on social media and offline.
At the same time, the brand identity was to become a practical framework that the editorial team could use on a daily basis: for news, analysis, special projects, social media and print materials.
Identity as the foundation for media
For an online media outlet, identity is used every day — with every new publication.
That is why it is important to define the rules from the start: how different types of content look, how fonts and colors work, and how the system adapts to different formats.
This helps the editorial team create new materials faster and makes the content easier for the audience to recognize in a crowded information space.
With a ready-to-use system in place, the team does not have to reinvent the design for every new publication. Each new piece of content becomes part of a consistent media identity.
Visual system
The identity is built around the concept of Shelter Media as a safe space for information.
The media outlet reports on events and explains them without distortion or manipulation. This idea became the foundation of its visual system and communication.
Parentheses are the key graphic element of the identity. They represent a space where information is presented with context and a clear focus on meaning.
A logo that works across different formats
We designed the wordmark to work equally well across different touchpoints — from social media avatars to article covers and physical assets.
The responsive version retains the logo’s distinctive elements even at smaller sizes.
Typography for everyday content
For a media outlet, choosing fonts is only part of the job. Clear rules for using them are just as important.
We created a typography system and hierarchy for headlines, explanatory text, and captions. It helps structure content and makes materials easier to navigate.
The editorial team now knows which font to use for each type of content, without having to make additional design decisions for every new publication.
Colour palette for recognisability
The primary color works as a visual marker of the media identity, while additional colors help distinguish between different types of content — news, special projects, and social media posts.
This gives different formats their own visual accents while keeping them part of one consistent system.
Media website design
The identity extends across the website — from the interface and navigation to individual article pages.
We defined distinct structures and visual accents for different types of content. News, analysis, and other formats look different while remaining part of the same system.
As a result, readers can navigate content more easily while the website maintains a consistent visual language.
Social media design
Social media is one of the main touchpoints between a media outlet and its audience, so the identity also needs to work in the feed.
Ready-made templates can be adapted to different topics and formats. The editorial team simply uses the existing structure and fills it with new content.
This helps maintain both publishing speed and a consistent look across the feed.
Merchandise and print materials
The identity also works on offline media: business cards, badges, pens, sweatshirts, notebooks, and mugs.
The main layouts are ready for printing and handover to contractors. The team can use the ready-made solutions without redesigning.
An identity the team can use independently
To make sure the system continues to work beyond the launch, we created brand guidelines for the team.
They define the rules for using the logo, colors, typography, and layout elements across digital formats.
It is a practical guide: a designer, SMM specialist, or contractor can open it and understand how to use the identity correctly without additional instructions.
A ready-to-use system for growing Shelter Media
As a result, Shelter Media received a design system that can evolve together with the media outlet.
It helps the team:
create new materials without designing them from scratch;
adapt content to different channels faster;
maintain a consistent style across formats;
involve different designers and contractors without losing visual consistency;
make the media outlet recognizable across the website, social media, and offline;
scale the identity as the publication grows.
The identity became more than a one-off design for the launch. It is a system that helps the media outlet create and distribute content every day.
