The TSN app for Apple TV

For TSN, we developed a native app for Apple TV, which brought the video content of one of Ukraine’s largest news organisations to Apple’s television platform.

The project formed part of TSN’s efforts to expand its digital presence across various devices. Our task was to create a user-friendly TV interface for viewing news and video content on the big screen.

In this project, we combined our experience in developing apps for various platforms with our expertise in creating digital products for the media.

Native app for Apple TV

We began development by selecting a technical approach that would ensure a rapid product launch whilst leaving sufficient scope for its future development.

We considered two options: using TVML or fully native development for the Apple TV platform.

Swift instead of TVML

After analysing the requirements, we opted for native development using Swift. This approach gave us greater control over the interface, the app’s logic and the user experience.

For a media product, this was important due to the specific nature of working with video content and the need to create an interface tailored specifically to Apple TV use cases.

News content on the big screen

The app’s interface was designed with the television usage scenario in mind: the user interacts with the content from a distance and controls the app using a remote control.

This required a different approach to navigation, typography, screen layout and content interaction compared to smartphones or traditional websites.

TSN across various digital platforms

Apple TV became one of the TSN digital channels our team worked on. We also developed the TSN mobile app for Android, featuring news, videos, podcasts, live streams and push notifications.

Working across different platforms has enabled us to adapt TSN’s content to various consumption scenarios — from quickly checking the news on a smartphone to watching videos on a large TV screen.
